Tough week

Mikaela wearing her Pinky's apron

It's been a long week. And certainly busier than most. In addition to volunteering at the hospital, Mikaela started working at Pinky's this week and Maimie started ballet class. In the meantime, I had to go see my doctor and schedule some tests. Mostly the week has been emotionally stressful.
Last Saturday (the day before Father's Day) began ordinarily enough. We all helped clean out the garage for Steven that morning in the heat and humidity. After lunch, Steve took the boys with him to get a power washer for cleaning the garage floor and driveway. Maimie and I went after the groceries for Sunday evening's meal and bought gifts for my Dad and Steven. Returning home around 2pm, I put Maimie to bed for a short nap and put the groceries away. I looked up a recipe on the laptop then went into the kitchen to marinate our steaks. It was around 2:30pm. I reached for a bag on the kitchen table and instantly my left hand went completely numb. It felt like dead weight as it dropped to my side. I was unable to grasp anything or even move it voluntarily. I had no function in my left hand. Though I was alone in the house, I said aloud, "Something is really wrong with me". The first two words came out normally, but the rest of the sentence came out slow and drawn out.
(Ok, while it's sad to admit that I talk to myself...ALOUD, it was actually helpful in diagnosing the problem.) Meanwhile, my vision was darkening and closing in as though I was getting ready to black out. I worried that I would pass out and no one would find me, so I made my way to the front door where I thought I had heard Mikaela heading for the porch earlier. By the time I reached the door, I was able to yell for Mikaela to find her dad. My voice was back to normal by this time, my left arm and hand were tingling and weak. I didn't have full function of my hand yet, and the roof of my mouth on the left side was tingling.
My first thought was a stroke. I looked on the laptop for confirmation before calling PromptCare. Of course, I was told to call an ambulance for immediate transfer to the ER. (Yeahh, right.... obviously they didn't know me very well.) After some deliberation,
Steve took me to the ER. I waited several hours before I was finally seen by a doctor, given 3 MRIs, and had several vials of blood taken. It was about 10:00pm before we left the ER that evening. All feeling and function was back in my hand and arm. There was no weakness or residual problems anywhere. The MRIs came back fine. The doctors all agreed it had most likely been a TIA (transient ischemic attack) or "mini-stroke". In addition, the most reasonable reason for the episode was likely a medication I had been taking for the last 3 months. However, due to my family history of TIA and strokes, I need to have more testing of my heart and cholesterol in the coming weeks. For now, I have stopped taking the (possibly) offending medication, started taking a baby aspirin daily, and have had to totally rely on my Heavenly Father for all of the anxiety I feel about this and any possible future episodes.

Philippians 3:6,7 " Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Though it was a frightening episode and the implications are still not clear, I have so much to be thankful about: It didn't happen just a short while sooner while I was driving with Maimie in the car. It didn't happen while we were without health insurance ( the card was issued on the 18th and the episode occurred on the 20th). There was no residual damage. I was at home-not in public. I didn't actually black out (which would have meant no driving for awhile). God is good.

Father's Day/ ballet lessons

Clowning on Father's Day

My children are very blessed to have such a great dad. I looked back through some family photo albums this past weekend to find photos of Steven with each of the kids when they first were born or became a part of our family. Steven's looks have changed a lot. It's hard to believe that he had jet black hair 15 years ago on his first father's day. The hair soon changed, but it still brings a smile to my heart to watch him with our children. In many ways he has changed as a person, husband, and father through the years. While I knew he would be a good father when I married him, I have been amazed at the depth of his love for each of our children.

Maimie ready for ballet lessons

This week Maimie began her first ballet class. To say she was excited would be quite the understatement. She kept thanking me over and over for the dance leotard and skirt. She twirled and she whirled. She put her little slippers in the denim Pooh bag that Mikaela carried to her first dance class (has it really been almost 11 years ago?!). When we arrived at the dance class, Maimie went into the practice room with the teacher and 2 other little girls while I sat in the waiting area watching through a large window into the practice room. Maimie had a little difficulty focusing on the teacher at first and waved at me and ran over to the window. Eventually she found her "X" on the floor and started following the teacher's lead. It was pretty cute. Notice I didn't say graceful...

Maimie really got into it once the music was playing. She started to dance a little freestyle with a look of intense emotion on her little face. This kid LOVES music!

With the high temperatures and humidity this week, we've been spending a lot of time in the pool.

Another Teenager??

Jacob 2 years old

Jacob 13 years old

I'm not sure how it could have happened. I mean, honestly, I can still vividly remember his 2nd birthday. Jacob was the cutest little guy. Little blond buzz haircut, jean shorts, no shirt, elmo snowboots. Adorable! I made an awesome little "Thomas the Train" for Jacob to play in with some big appliance boxes. He was just all smiles all day that day.

And now just look at him. Thirteen. THIRTEEN. Still cute, but with a slightly better fashion sense. Making this mommy feel a whole lot older than I'm ready to feel.

Jacob met a few friends at the pool for the afternoon last Friday, the 12th. That evening we ate Pizza, ice cream, and cake with Grandpa and Grandma. Of course the weather was so unseasonably nice that we played out in the yard, too. I think Jacob enjoyed becoming a teenager.

Now for this week's Friday Fashion challenge. To sum up in 3 words: Mad for plaid! Miss Maimie chose this lovely ensemble for the Turkey Festival pancake breakfast. First she paired the black and white houndstooth plaid leggings (that had belonged to her big sister) with a multicolored sun shirt in lavenders and blues. Her hair was worn down for the occasion (...all the better to get syrup in it!). The day's accessories included the red/white/pink hearts necklace and a little clippie that was hot pink with a cat or something on it (clipped to the top of her shirt by the necklace). Fortunately that morning I had located the missing white "fwip fwops" which she chose in order to downplay her feet and draw the eye upward (so one can get the full effect of the loveliness). When I pulled the shoes out of her Sunday school bag, Maimie responded with, "For me?...Ohh, thank you ever, ever so much, Mudder!"
